The Pandemic is leading to a renewed interest and some creative strategic ideas in golf.

The NGF count showed 24.8 million golfers in the U.S. in 2020, it is the largest net increase(2 percent over 2019) in last 17 years. New players (beginners playing their first round and lapsed golfers coming back to the game for years) numbered 6.2 million. The highest youth golfer since Tiger’s 1997 Masters win as well. Women golfers jumping 450,000 or 8 percent and making up nearly a quarter of all golfers, that is the highest number over the last five years.

Interesting that golf course owners find something new in their membership behaviors after social distancing: entire families, cooped up at home, are arriving at the first tee to play together; sales of discounted youth golf passes are exploding; and more golfers are taking one person golf cart on the course because only family members can share a cart.

The next move in golf should be about how could we take advantage of Golf's surge in popularity to make a fundamental improve to golf’s primary product: pace of play and enjoyable experience to keep golfers returning

Pace of play

For the vast majority of golfers, a round of golf takes significantly longer than desired, which meanwhile means that many no longer play golf as often. Here are some facts from online platform Golfshake.com based on almost 7,000 rounds of golf and the feedback from more than 1,000 golfers, pros and club managers.

• 59% of golfers need more than 4 hours for a round of golf on the weekend.
• 90% of golfers would like to finish a round in less than 4 hours.
• For over 20% of golfers, the generally slow game keeps them from golfing.
• Only 25% of the golf rounds examined lasted 3.5 hours or less.

When asked what the ideal length of a round of golf would be, 90.79% of respondents would like a round of less than 4 hours. Still the majority of golfers with over 53% would even prefer less than 3.5 hours for a round of golf.

The fact for most golfers a slow pace of play reduces the enjoyment of golf and waiting often results in distraction and poorer playing.

Golf’s strategy to reduce waiting during a round has been to try to change customer behavior through awareness, coercion or peer pressure, rather than viewing the issue as an opportunity for a business solution. 

“Ready Golf” should not be confused with readiness to play as described in the “Player Behavior” section of this manual.
