The story of golf industry this year has followed the arc of a typical Hollywood script. In the contrast of dramatic decline on opening golf clubs (pandemic shutdown courses or delayed openings), golf enjoyed a remarkable surge in both participation and rounds played after early 2020. NGF President Joe Beditz said: “The main reason why, is less resource competition – less trips, fewer available entertainments, limited ways to spend disposable income.”
Golfing is played outdoors, conducive to social distancing, played by young and older generations alike and its vast, open greens are perfect for a mental and physical escape. The NGF count showed 24.8 million golfers in the U.S. in 2020, it is the largest net increase(2 percent over 2019) in last 17 years. New players (beginners playing their first round and lapsed golfers coming back to the game for years) numbered 6.2 million. The highest youth golfer since Tiger’s 1997 Masters win as well. Women golfers jumping 450,000 or 8 percent and making up nearly a quarter of all golfers, that is the highest number over the last five years.
Interesting that golf course owners find something new in their membership behaviors after social distancing: entire families, cooped up at home, are arriving at the first tee to play together; sales of discounted youth golf passes are exploding; and more golfers are taking one person golf cart on the course because only family members can share a cart.
The next move in golf should be about how could we take advantage of Golf's surge in popularity to make a fundamental improve to golf’s primary product: pace of play and enjoyable experience to keep golfers returning
For the vast majority of golfers, a round of golf takes significantly longer than desired, which meanwhile means that many no longer play golf as often. Here are some facts from online platform Golfshake.com based on almost 7,000 rounds of golf and the feedback from more than 1,000 golfers, pros and club managers.
When asked what the ideal length of a round of golf would be, 90.79% of respondents would like a round of less than 4 hours. Still the majority of golfers with over 53% would even prefer less than 3.5 hours for a round of golf.
The fact for most golfers a slow pace of play reduces the enjoyment of golf and waiting often results in distraction and poorer playing.
If there’s anything universal about the human beings, we hate waiting. We hate waiting to hit a golf shot, waiting at traffic lights, check in a hotel or flights. That is to say, the most important factors in the golfer experience is pace of play – both the overall duration of the round and the flow of playing.
Besides that, more like the ranger’s professionalism, a friendly environment and well-kept lawns. Everyone prefer to a welcoming, affordable and enjoyable experience on an environmentally and economically sustainable golf course.
"Ready Golf" is not appropriate in match play as there is a strategy between opponents and a specific method is required to determine which player will play first. In stroke play, players might think they were at a disadvantage if they had to hit earlier. On this basis, it is permissible for a marshal to promote "ready golf" in the game, and there is strong evidence that playing "standby golf" improves the pace of the game. In a survey of Australian golf clubs conducted by Golf Australia, 94% of clubs that had offered ready golf to their members had some success in improving the pace of the game. 25% said they were satisfied. Success!
Golf’s strategy to reduce waiting during a round has been to try to change customer behavior through awareness, coercion or peer pressure, rather than viewing the issue as an opportunity for a business solution.
“Ready Golf” should not be confused with readiness to play as described in the “Player Behavior” section of this manual.
Golf courses spend large amounts of time and money trying to deliver what golfer wants, but do they really know which investments are most likely to improve their members’ experience or bring new customers?
Typically a quicker speed of play calls for a more enjoyable golfing time. It ensures golfers a consistent and constant involving and not be forced to wait or get distracted. This doesn't mean you have to play in a rush, it just means how could we play more efficiently. Golf is a game you can never get too good at, and, nothing makes us better golf players than having more time on practicing.
